Stock Symbol
A stock symbol, also known as a stock ticker, is a string of letters that identify every publicly traded company. Stock symbols of companies listed and traded on the NYSE have up to three letters in as their symbol, where as Nasdaq listed stocks have up to four letters.
Some example stock tickers:
- Google – GOOG
- Disney – DIS
- Microsoft – MSFT
- Exxon Mobil – XOM
- Apple – AAPL
Companies listed in foreign markets can have added letters on the end, for instance Canadian stocks haveĀ .ca attached to each ticker. There are also companies that are traded as pink sheets, which are given a .pk attached to each symbol. Depending on the country numbers may also be used alongside letters to form a stock symbol.
