Shanghai Stock Exchange
The largest stock exchange in mainland China. Stocks, bonds, funds and a few warrants are traded on this exchange.
There are two classes of shares, A shares and B shares. A shares are denominated in the Chinese currency the Chinese RMB, and they are mostly accessible only to native Chinese (and qualified foreign institutions.) B shares are open to both foreigners and native Chinese for investment.
Most of the companies listed are formerly state owned companies. However, despite the fact that they’re publicly traded, most of them still have the state holding a majority holding.
Individual investors and speculators have a large sway over the market’s movements, which may explain the large swings that are often seen in the market.
