Heavy Industry

Refers to industries that are usually capital-intensive (meaning a large amount of fixed-assets on the balance sheet and a high capital input to labor input ratio) with high barriers to entry. Nowadays, such industries are often associated with being heavy polluters. They include mining, production and refining of minerals, chemicals, industry machinery and the defense industry. Companies in heavy industry tend to sell their products and services to other companies, rather than directly to consumers.
