Fund Overlap

When an investor owns several funds or ETFs and their respective holdings have some securities that are the same,  the overlap results in lower diversification than intentioned.

While some overlap is natural, it may not suit the investor’s needs or interests  if some funds are all overexposed to a certain sector or even a certain stock. An investor can check on the major holdings of his funds to see if this situation exists.
