Cutting a Melon
A term that refers to the board of directors declaring a special dividend in addition to its regular dividend. This may be due to a company having more cash than it knows how to deploy and decides to return it to shareholders. These special dividends may not be boons to shareholders as they are taxed on them(unless the stock is held in a nontaxable retirement account.)
