Credit Balance
When an investor or trader sells short a stock, he receives cash from the sale, which is deposited in his account and is known as the credit balance. Since some of the proceeds from the short sale are held as margin requirements due to Regulation T, not all of the funds in the credit balance can be used, some must be held for margin maintenence. The credit balance earns the investor interest in some brokerage accounts.
