Controlling Interest
50% of the shares outstanding plus one share gives an investor or firm a controlling interest in a company, which allows it to enact changes in management and business operations at the top level. However, for a large company, this is usually unnecessary, and owning 5-10% or even less of the shares outstanding can give the investor or firm a large influence.
