Buy Side

1. A term that refers to a buy-side analyst, namely an analyst that is employed by a money managing institution such as a mutual fund or a hedge fund.Since buy-side analysts are ultimately accountable to a money-managing institution, the sole measurement of their value would be how profitable their recommendations to the firm are. Contrary to a sell side analyst, a buy side analyst probably  won’t publicize his research or opinions, as a competent buy side analyst would be very valuable to the firm itself.

2. A term that can also refer to the majority of investors who are not nearing their retirement. Since they are going to be net investors till retirement, they are on the buy side. Buffett explains that, “If you’re going to be a net consumer of hamburgers, you want the price of hamburgers to go down. If you’re going to be a net buyer of stocks for a long period of time, you want the price of stocks to go down.”
