Breaking the Buck
Breaking the buck refers to the scenario in which the net asset value of a money market fund falls below $1. This usually does not happen as the principal in a money market fund is usually constant as it invests in low risk, highly liquid debt securities with short maturities. However, defaults and investment losses via speculation can cause a money market fund to lose money.
