Barometer

Barometers are investments that are indicative of future trends.  The stock market is believed to be a barometer of the general economy as the stock market generally slumps before a recession and recovers before a recovery.  However no clear casual relationship has been established. The theory that stock markets are a barometer of economic activity was proposed by Charles Dow,  founder of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Dow Theory.
