Barometer Stock

A stock that is believed to be indicative of the direction of the overall stock market.

Barometer stocks are also known as “bellwethers”.  However, they may lose their status over time as the economy evolves. General Motors was believed to be a barometer stock back in the past, but has less signifiance nowadays.
