American Option
American options are options that can be exercised throughout its lifetime. They are the most common type of options traded on futures exchanges. An American option contrasts with an European option. The latter can only be exercised at expiration and thus American options have an advantage in terms of flexibility.
Note that the name American or European does not refer to the option’s origination, but is solely based on whether it can be exercised during its lifetime or not.
