You can place as many as orders as you can afford. Let's say you have $1,000 and the stock is trading at $10 per share. That means you can afford 100 shares of this particular stock.
Thus, you could place 100 market orders of 1 share each, or 1 market order for all 100 shares. Note though that every broker charges a commission fee for each trade you make so in this case it would be far cheaper and better to simply place 1 order for 100 shares of the stock.
