Can be immediate or never trigger. A limit order technically says, "buy me into this stock at this price, $xxx, or better."
So if Apple is trading at say $100, and you place a limit order to buy at $90, well the order will not fill until Apple stock falls to $90 or lower. On the contrary if you place your limit order at $105 then it will fill immediately at $100 because Apple stock was "at a better price than $105".
Hope this helps!
