Stock exchanges

Can you invest in a stock exchange ie. london exchange, Hongkong exchange, ect. as a stock? and if so do you have to be in that exchange to do so or can you do that through another exchange? also do all or most exchanges have there own style S&P index that you can invest in or ithat different per market or exchange?

Yes you can invest in other countries but you have to have a broker that allows you to do so. For example Scottrade has service in China.

When it comes to the S&P 500 question that is a big yes as well. Every country has their own major index it follows to represent the market as a whole. A good place to find info on international markets would probably be Bloomberg as they cover most.

You still didn't really answer my question, or maybe I'm not asking it right.
Can you buy a stock exchange as a Stock? Like HongKong (HKEX) @ such-in-such dollars and thankyou for the other answer, but does there exist a sort of bible or document that lists all the stock exchanges and their indexes? I appreciate you taking the time out to answer these.

As Blain stated, you can buy shares in the company that owns a stock exchange. Or, you could buy a basket of stocks in an ETF, like the QQQQ (Nasdaq) or SPY (Spyders S&P 500), which are baskets of stocks - under one symbol.

Thankyou that explains it fully, I would still like to know if there is somewhere that tells you all the foreign exchanges, and their indexes

There are quite a few. I use Bloomberg for looking briefly over all the stock indices every morning before the market opens here in the U.S.

S&P 500 try ticker SPY or IVV. I dont know much about world market data but this looks like a good place to start: World Markets
or for info about foriegn companies try Welcome to adr.com, the central source for information on DRs (Depositary Receipts) and international equities. hope that helps.

here in india we can invest in nasdaq and broker is giving that service
