Question

I worked for a company several years ago who used to give employees shares in company stock. I no longer work there, obviously, but was curious if I still owned those shares, or can a company take it back? Also, can anyone tell me how I would go about finding out if I do?

First I wanted to say welcome to the forums, since I noticed that this is your first post.

I hope that someone backs me up on this, because I am not 100% sure.

I would say that unless you receiving these shares was based on some sort of benchmark that you didn't end up reaching, then these shares are yours. Just as your salary, this is part of your income.

If I was in your position, I would call the human relations department and ask this same question. I am sure that this isn't the first time this came about.

MDZ is right - your best bet is to contact HR for that company. Sometimes these shares are contingent on working at the company for a certain amount of time to encourage retention in high turnover industries. If you are hired away to a better job before your vesting date, you forfeit the shares.
