First I wanted to say welcome to the forums, since I noticed that this is your first post.
I hope that someone backs me up on this, because I am not 100% sure.
I would say that unless you receiving these shares was based on some sort of benchmark that you didn't end up reaching, then these shares are yours. Just as your salary, this is part of your income.
If I was in your position, I would call the human relations department and ask this same question. I am sure that this isn't the first time this came about.
