Blue Chip defined by investopedia is "A nationally recognized, well-established and financially sound company. Blue chips generally sell high-quality, widely accepted products and services. Blue-chip companies are known to weather downturns and operate profitably in the face of adverse economic conditions, which helps to contribute to their long record of stable and reliable growth."

After the market crash from '00-'03 bluechips GE had fallen about 2.5x over and Microsoft about 3x ($45 to $15). While bluechips do tend to move less during market downturns (and less upward during market uptrends) they can still get raped. Just a cautionary thought.
