Entrepreneur/Business Discussion
Hey everyone!
I always enjoy hearing others' stories about their experiences in starting their own businesses, and what it was all like. So for those of you who have your own businesses, or are just starting them, please let us know all about it! What did you find the most difficult, what was easier than you expected? What do you feel is one of the most important aspects of being successful?
Also, for those of you who haven't yet started, do you have any particular ideas of what you'd like to start? Thanks everyone!
As for me, we started our music entertainment marketing and promotions company where we're helping new artists gain exposure in the industry and have awareness of their music out there. I've found communications in building contacts to be one of the most important aspects of this business. In addition, creativity, a strong passion, and high energy level are very important as well. Many times I would hear, you have to know people, you have to have a lot of contacts to do this or that. That list of contacts doesn't come to you by magic, actually, you build that list, and anyone can do it, with a little effort. If you'd ever like to discuss any of this even more so, please feel free to contact me. :-)
Please tell us your stories, I'd love to hear all about what you are doing!

Kristen, I love your passion for business! It is great to see the feminine population taking control . I just wanted to comment on building a contact list, it is amazing who you run into and meet along your path towards success of some kind. You set a end-goal, work hard at achieving it, and along the way meet people that not only help you achieve your goal, but come back to help in many ways you never thought possible. It just amazes me thinking back at all the people I have even come into contact with and now talk closely with from utilizing the forums alone.
To the future,

I would love to comment on this one.
After lots and lots of reading in all types of business books esp. Richdad, i thought it would be best to start a business. But the question was, "what type of business makes decent money, and i enjoy doing?"
Eventually it came to me, a lawncare business. I already had experience cutting my lawn and my neighbors. I had a knack for precision and wanted all of the lines on the grass from the mower to be straight as possible and all of the trimming i did to be as clean cut as i could. I was somewhat good at it and thought i could take it to the next level. A friend of mine was added making the business a "team." We sketched a few ideas and ran through a few ideas. A few days later we had shirt orders in, papers posted around town and one extra lawn to cut schedule. What was next was simply waiting patiently for either the phone to ring, to recive an email or hopefully having the idea spread by word of mouth.
Over time we had about 4 lawncutting jobs. This coming summer we have 3 more planned. More for a lawyers office, one for a Commercial Real Estates office and lastly of the General Manager Of Fazolis house. Time will tell where this brings us. We have plans for expanding once we can drive. Hopefully everything goes as planned..
Concluding this, it was an AMAZING learning experience for sure. I have learned TONS just from getting where we are now. It doesn't take much to start.. Thanks for listening!
All the best,

Thank you for all your input, it means a lot. I feel reading as much as you can from more of the non-traditional business books like Rich Dad and some of the other motivational/inspirational type books can really help you to open your minds in seeing the many opportunities out there. Then, the best education you can possibly receive, is through real - life experiences in setting a goal, making a plan, having a vision and going for it!
Spence - loved your story about starting the lawn care business! That's fantastic, that you already have those big customers. Creating relationships with these people will help you connect to even more people. We can all learn from each other so well!

A contracting business is pretty well developed area to get into right now.
I personally would open up an "inventors palace", IE an inventors workshop, where all people do is twidle around all day-getting paid to-do either R&D work or just invent or work on inventions, hell, the "invention" doesn't even have to be a physical object, I know some people who made millions off an idea, and then put it on paper.
Its a crazy idea that hasn't really caught on yet that I'm aware of, but its got soo much potential and there would be lots of profits you could make off of the patents etc. Highly profitable.
There are a zillion things I would like to do (I'm a jack of all trades..sorta), but that one stick out the most in my mind.

I am sure Blain could tell you more, but from what i know, The patenting process is VERY expensive. Thousands and thousands of dollars in the long run.

Why do people do it?
Its an easy question to answer: if you do get a patent, more likely than not, its to make a profit that over shadows the price.
I'm sure edison didn't just get patents because he felt like it
