How bad is the economy?

I've been following what is going on with the economy since back in the fall. I have watched the markets for a while and I do not know what to make of it all. I hear and read things of how bad it is getting and how the state budgets are really taking a tumble. And there is also the President's new package that will soon take effect. I just want to know how low we really are. Some people say things are not that bad and others say we are still waiting on the worst of it. What do you say to all this?

More important than where the economy is going, is what you're doing and how you're going to deal with/take advantage of it. If you think about it, a bad economy is like a person having some illness. Sometimes it's a hiccup, sometimes it's the common flu, and sometimes it's a fever. A person has to go through cycles of stress and rest, fitness and illness. Why shouldn't an economy have good and "bad" periods either?

You know the U.S. economy is pretty scary when an AP report contains the words “crippled,” “worse,” “deteriorate” and “bleak.” (Fed says US economy will get worse in 2009) The Federal Reserve predicts that “unemployment could climb as high as 8.8% this year and that the economy would contract for a full calendar year for the first time since 1991.”

On the horizon, however, the Fed sees a golden dawn, with joblessness falling to 6.7% in 2011 and GDP growing by up to 5%.

The economy appears to be in very bad shape, and each day it seems like people become more negative about the economy.

IMO there is a lot of alarmism about the economy.

There are opportunities in bad and good markets but it does require DD... IMO if you have the cash now is a good time to jump into the market the only direction long term that I see is up! Nothing wrong buying stocks at the bottom and selling at the top!

Economy is not bad but we are making our economy bad.we’ve seen the economy in much worse shape. There’s little doubt left that we’re headed for — or in the beginnings of — an economic downturn. The housing recession that began in 2006 is one of the worst since the 1930s. It’s likely that things will get worse before they get better. But it’s impossible to say at this moment in time how bad they’ll get.The government is also temporarily cutting some taxes and offering guarantees worth hundreds of billions of pounds to banks (as a result of which, government debt is rising sharply).

The economy doesn't effect traders, it only effects investors. late 2008 and early 2009 was the best time in history for the U.S. stock market. It has been boring lately with the VIX under 30 but that will change. I do want to get Americans back to work, but as traders our economy should not change.

The best advice I ever got from any one was from a very successful trader who told me to quit looking at the market as either going up or down. If I did I would only be comfortable and feel better about trading when it was going up. He told me, look at the market as going either left or right. And try to make the correct turn each day.
