FIO Book Exchange

This Idea was sent in via email from Ray out of the lovely hot state of Texas:

"I noticed from the start that the staff and members of FIO are a very
literate lot and obviously do a lot of bookreading....books are mentioned
often. I buy and read books that interest me....mainly politics, sports, and
now investing. I read them then put them in a bookshelf or somewhere to
gather dust. No way would I think of disposing of them after paying $20 to
$30 a pop. But I rarely go back and reread a book. That is a waste because
someone of like interests would like to read it and would if they could swap
one of THEIR own previously read books. I have done some of this with some cronies on a political forum at Huntingnet.com (hunting forum with a very active political forum within). It was an informal swap....one guy mentions a book he read, another expresses an interest in it.....they agree to swap through the mail. It's a win-win for sure. There is one potential
downside...exchanging mail addresses with someone you probably have never met but know to an extent
on the forum. Some would probably have some heartburn with that....I didn't because I felt like the individuals I swapped with were ok....a cop and a
judge. I don't know enough about the mechanics of the site to suggest how a book swap could be set up but I thought I'd throw the idea out there...."

This may take some planning, but I like Ray's idea and I feel that if we could put something together to house it it could work just fine. Please post up any thoughts good or bad that you can think of so we can discuss and build on this idea. Thank you

Hmm, I like the idea behind it a lot. I was trying to think of a way to solve the "problem" of having books just sit around after I read them. I also agree that there are a few problems that we need to work out to have people trust one another.

One question I had was is it a permanant swap, or was it it just a temporary type thing?

My thinking is if you wanted to swap it in the first place....because you knew you probably wouldn't read it again....then getting it back wouldn't be a factor. You would have the option of swapping the book that you just received....new stuff all the time.
Also, some people read a book hurriedly, some read one a few pages at a time. If you were waiting to get one back, you might be disappointed.....but if you have the swapped for book....no prob. My $.02

Ray,

That does make a lot of sense to me. So basically it works as a trust thing then. I contact you, tell you that I have the dictionary and will swap it for the Bible. We both promise to send it out, and then go our seperate ways. This works.

A thought I had was what if we had a way to rank members swaping honesty. It would be very similiar to amazon.com when you rank a seller. One there, no one buys with someone who has a bad ranking, and on here, no one would want to trade books with someone who has a bad ranking. What do you think on that?

Right! And ebay has the feedback comments that have made a difference in purchases I have and haven't made. Good idea!

I like this idea I am just sad I have no books to trade I am one of those sad people who will read a book many times.
I think this will operate best on the "honor" system to start. Maybe if you have a book(s) you would like to trade you could post it in the general discussion forum. Using a format like:
Book Title (s):
Titles looking for/ make me an offer:
Where I live (general location)
Have anyone interested in trading post an offer etc... and the originator can contact the person(s) by PM to set up the details of the exchange.
I don't know if this will work or not but it might be the least work to get it going.
It might turn the general discussion fourm into a bulletin board but that is not a bad thing at this point. Just my 2 bits worth

I'm getting a list of potential swap books from around here.
I don't have any investing books at this time....have thought I might like Cramer's newest book or I'm sure there is a "Stock Market for Dummies" out there.
My Activity Director says it's time to go to the mountains so she is about to drag me kicking and screaming up there. We'll be out of touch for a couple of weeks but it'll be interesting to see how this has progressed. Thanks for your interest! Ray

I guess it would come down to whether creating a ranking system would be feasible or not. I agree with Joe on that an honor system would be easier, but I don't know how many people would trust it.

Ray, when you did the swap, did the site have anything for ranking people? If not, this could be a cool niche to start working on filling. I could see people joining just for the book swap program. Again, I am just brainstorming and not putting in financial consideration, but IF feasible, I think creating a reliable system right from the start makes the most sense. Also, if we were abel to create a "search" feature similar to Amazon where you can go and find the book you want, choose the "swaper" (not going to be many choices at first) it could become real cool

I hear you on the re-reading thing Joe, but I bet you have at least 1-2 books you don't mind traveling around? OR maybe we could make it optional for the books to be returned for the buyer, and let the person putting to book up choose?
