Global Warming

I was watching something on this on the Discovery Channel and I found it pretty interesting how they are mentioning random facts and opinions about global warming. I guess some photographer has been taking pictures of different places around the world for 20+ years and has visually seen a big change. Apparently, fuel emissions from vehicles equate to a couple tons of bad news during their overall lifespan.

hahaha Blain, you got to it just before me! Tomorrow I was planning to start my thread on Global Warming. I will just add to the bottom of this. Keep the ideas flowing, I'm loving it!

Open to all,

Global warming is a topic that came to my mind a few weeks ago after watching a show on it. What is it you ask? Thanks to our friends at www.dictionary.com, Global warming is an increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere, especially a sustained increase sufficient to cause climatic change. Global Warming is on of the largest environmental issues talked about lately around the world. Most people say, "why do i need to worry about the earth heating up 2 or 3 degress in the next 100 years, it won't effect me, I won't be here." Well Global warming won't necessarily effect us, but generations to come.

Scientists say the problem is polluting. Releasing carbon dioxide into the earths atmosphere. Ever heard of Greenhouse gasses? They are like a blanket covering the earth. Holding all of these gasses inside. By adding pollution into the air, that blanket is thinkening, holding in MORE heat, causing the earths temp. to rise. The buring of oils and other fossil fuels has added over 700 billion tons of carbon dioxide pollution into the atmosphere as if it were a sewer. Within this century and since dinosaurs were roaming the surface of the earth, all of this warming is a dangerous, dangerous thing to be doing.

In the next 25-50 years, earths' temperature could rise 3-5 degress which means glaciers are melting, and moutain tops are loosing snow. Places where the residents currently have a white christmas could soon change.

Take for example the Arctic. Over the past 25-30 years the Arctic has lost over 400,00 square miles of ice. People predict that there will be no more summer sea ice in the Arctic. That poses very harmful threats.

Take a large ice sheet for example. If the greenland ice sheet were to melt away which could happen eventually, sea levels around the world could rise 20 ft. That would drown the southern third of florida where nearly 4 billion people now live. It would make necessary to build a sea wall to protect Manhatten and other major cities around the world. There are over 100 million people who live within 3 ft of sea level. As storms worsen and water rises the potential for disaster is almost certain.

The hot temperatures could also trigger emidemic spread of infectious diseases such as malaria and cholora. The warm air also resulted in bugs eating over 4 million acres of spruce in Alaskan territories. Throughout the world some lakes are expected to dry up by the year 2050 which will result in a shortage of freshwater and effect hundreds of millions of people. These results will be deadly.

Drought, flooding, and more intense hurricanes will lead to destroyed beaches, homes, coastal areas, and rising water. This is what we will leave to our children if we don't do something soon to slow global warming.

We in the U.S. are 5% of the worlds population but we produce over 25% of the worlds global warming emmisions. Mainly from the cars we drive and the way we produce energy.

Think over this topic a little and in the next day or so I will post again about ways we can reduce these carbon emmisions into our atmosphere ourselves. Hopefully you enjoy learning and helping out the world. Like i previously stated, it's not directly focused on our generation, but generations to come. Do you want our children and grandchildren to be living under these harsh conditions of Global Warming? Hopefully not.

Respectively,

Lol, i believe global warming is actually a very huge topic, and there are many many ways of looking at it. 1 is of ourse, you look at what is likely to happen in the next 50 or so years. If you want to look at the really long term, 1000+ years and more, go read up "A short history of nearly everything" by Bill Bryson, i wouldn't care to elaborate.

Basically, when we release more greenhouse gases(carbon dioxide for example), it traps the heat inside the earth's atmosphere. The result, is more energy being present on earth. Remember that energy cannot be created, or destroyed, the only way is to throw them back into outer space . I'll touch on this excessive energy later.

So what does more energy mean for the world? Actually, i don't know. I'll just raise some examples.

1. Extremes of climate on earth. The areas near the equator will get warmer, thus, desertification in areas like Africa is going to affect agriculture there, and whatsoever other problems. The areas near the north and south pole, however, may get cooler. The higher energy levels present will cause some of the iceshelfs on the edge of these poles to break off, and thus, cause problems and so on(yea, i know you all watched the day after tomorrow)

2. More of the weird weird stuff, like hurricanes and earthquakes. As we all know, there has been a great rise in the incidence of hurricanes(tropical cyclones), tsunamis, and earthquakes, whatever. I dunno much about the earthquake part. But for the hurricanes, this is what happens. Take the analogy of a hurricane as a cake. One of the ingredients you need will be a huge body of warm water(so that they evaporate quickly and so on), which is why it never happens in the north, or south, only the tropial areas get hit the most. With the advent of global warming, ppl guess that seawaters(near the equator) will get warmer, thus the higher incidence of hurricanes. Perhaps some earthquake specialist can tell us what's happening there.

3. The rise of pests, like mozzies in the tropical areas. Mosquitoes, and the what nots, thrive at a temperature slightly higher than the usual(not the high temperatures will not cause them to die, haha, that's a myth). Thus, they will reporduce and get higher in numbers. This will cause problems like the spread of dengue fever and malaria(S'pore has been whacked by dengue fever real bad this year, 2 of my friends got hit)

Haha, i guess i'll touch on solutions of global warming right now(reminds me of my geography classes, local, regional, global) What i meant is that you can deal with it on different scales, the local(which is what changes you can make to your lifestyle), the regional(what your country and your neighbouring countries can do as a group), and the global(agreement countries around the world can make to curb carbon emissions)

For the local, i guess spencer will be touching on them. For the regional, we have examples like the ASEAN Haze Pact(basically to stop indonesia from burning its forests). On the global scale, we have stuff like the Kyoto Protocol(which the US didn't sign ) All these pacts and agreements are a good sign, but they are not effective. Take the Haze Pact for example, indonesia, the culprit itself wouldnt sign the Pact, and the Kyoto Protocol, which the US wouldn't sign

The truth is that will we are making efforts to cut down on all this carbon emissions, we should have done so a long time ago, and its starting to take its toll now. So even if we take taking action, there will be damages, and poeple will be saying(see we are doing this and this and this, but it didn't work). And, the sad fact is, what we do, changing lifestyle and so on(it will still help a lot), may not stop the situation much unless the ppl at the top stop talking and start takin action.
