So, what do you do for fun? Hobbies, games, etc.

This is the FIO version of an Investopedia thread I posted a few days back. Do you invest in your leisure activities?

I know there are some poker players here, and at least one chinese chess player. The odds are good that some of you folks have no small amount of leisure dollars sunk into golf equipment/memberships/greens fees, too. I've already bared my soul in regard to my love of chess, and mentioned in the investopedia forums my interest in shooting sports and motorcycling.

So, do tell. Where do you spend your leisure time and dollars? Knitting, hackey-sack, underwater basket weaving, or caber tossing?

My personal interests led me to analyse and buy (simulator) stock in HDI and RGR. I also did a casual search for Drueke (manufacturer of chess men/game supplies), but had no luck in discovering if they are a publicly traded company or not.

I have to wonder about Krispy Kreme Donuts as a hobby/leisure activity, really. At least you've some balance in WWW, especially if you are buying hiking boots

I love to Golf, I read finance books in my leisure time, and I am a huge ancient Roman History buff.

Back in the day I used to be a huge online gamer with War Craft 2. Eventually though at age 15ish I realized it had grown into an addiction (I was playing about 4 hours a day) and had to "destroy" it once and for all (ended up burning the cd to stop myself, in the process burning my hand really bad, but nevertheless I "won" ). Total investment = $30 roughly and a TON of time (I was at one point ranked 23rd in the world). It is surprising though how the basic concepts of management stuck in my brain and are reflected in everyday activity. I am convinced it made me a better skilled business person overall.

Now a days my money and time goes into the FIO . I probably spend about 4 to 8 hours a day (trade stocks while the market is open as well) "playing" and pondering new ideas, making changes, etc. I won't lie though, another favorite past time for me has been Scrabble. They have a free one at Starbucks I played a while back, and since then have found that you can play it online for free (thanks Kristen for getting me addicted). So, I enjoy enhancing my diction choices as well.

Beyond that, I typically play hockey in a roller league with my bro during the summer. I Used to be a big ice hockey fan until I found out that I had to start paying 50% of the $1,400 ice bill (this was at age 16 mind you); so now a days I just stick to roller which is about $100 per season. Any other hockey fans out there? Or maybe you were a War Craft 2 buff... share it!

Scrabble is a grand game. I believe the turntable board is an innovation right up there with the wheel and the lever. We usually have a mini-tourn at every family holiday gathering.

Now that you've reminded me, I'll have to see if Selchow & Righter is a publicly traded compnay.

Oh wow. Speaking of computer games, I was hooked on rollercoaster tycoon (which I had a pirated copy from my neighbor). The Sims was always one of my favorites.. I know now there about about 7 or 8 diff. Sims games. Yea, learning how to manage a family was ok, but i was in for buying the cool new pin ball machines, HUGE pools, basketball courts, and every other small game that was of interstest and in budget for the resisdents in my game. Designing the house always appealed to me too. I wont go into details regarding cheat codes, b/c i know we all have done it. It was always cool to have the HUGEST house in Sim CIty woth about 5 million. If only there were cheat codes for real life? yea right.

I even got into online monopoly for a while, but nothing too important. I guess thats what my early ages were like, but ya cant call those investments per se.

The original Pokemon cards were one of th greatest too. I actaully never played the "trading game" before. I just wandted to biggest and baddest pokemon with the most HP. The shinny ones were always a nice feature. I remember speaking with Moss about this one. He said they would really hold no value for them down the road. I guess with his explanation it makes sense.

Spending money on the hottest Lego kits was what most of my money went towards. I loved building new things, then taking them apart and reconstructing another object. Legos, Knex, (there was one more) that kept me busy..

Great thread Dee-Eight!

All the best,
