Hello from PA

Finally joined after lurking around for a while I'm a firefighter in Pittsburgh PA, recently divorced and just bought a house, after my ex got the last one.

I really never did much investing, other than what I have in my Prudential Fund through work (That lost over $1000 this past week)

Did some trading back in late 1999 early 2000 but didn't do so hot. (Lost it all)

I Just put a few thousand $$ into a Scotttrade account today, and this time hoping I can avoid the mistakes I made in the past. (I can be kind if impulsive at times lol)

Right now the money is just sitting, and I'm hoping to learn by reading through these forums and some of the other good internet sites

Hope you don't mind the questions that are sure to follow

Bill

Bill,

I just wanted to send a hello your way! How long have you been fighting fires? As for the questions, ask away. That is the whole point of having a forum, so we can all help each other. Glad to see you made it to the forums, and I hope to keep seeing you on here.

Mark

Been a firefighter for over 20 years now. Hopefully going to retire in 4 or 5 years.

As for the questions, I should have asked them earlier. I was a little impatient and bought SBUX today. I read through some of the lessons, and even though I really didn't understand most of it, looking at SBUX info, it seemed like it should be a safe buy. I really don't understand the moving average stuff, but it is a buy according to Analyst Reports. Bought toward the end of the trading day for $36. It's $35.59 now. I only have 80 shares though.

I guess I should have saved this for a different forum

Bill,

Alright, 20 years is a good time fighting fires, one of those jobs that every kid wants at one point in their life.

As for the question, to be honest, I am not the best person to answer the question, but I will give you a short answer on the moving average. A moving average it a summary where a stock has been for a given period of time, usually 50 days. My understanding is if a stock is under the moving average, it can be expected to eventually climb back up to that point. From here is gets a little more complicated, because a moving average can also serve as a point for resistance for the price.

Like you said, if you ask this question under the investing thread, you will get a lot more discussion on it.

Hope that was some help,

Mark

BTW, here is a link that explains it as well http://www.investopedia.com/terms/m/movingaverage.asp
