Any serious investor/trader will have more than one broker. Several reasons. Sometimes the data feed will stall on one broker, so I simply switch to my other broker's data feed. Also, if you're lucky enough to have an account well over $500k, then you need another broker for insurance as brokers only cover that much, i.e. $400k in equity value and $100k in cash. I use MB Trading as my primary broker and TDAmeritrade as secondary. My trading platform is QuoteTracker...both brokers integrate with it fully so I can trade with both accounts on the same screen and layout. If I wish I can trade with MB Trading while watching my streamer quotes with data feed from Ameritrade and vice versa.
