I'm afraid to suggest anything because, realy, I haven't been that good.
But ok...
This are the stocks I own and bought around todays prices or above andwhich I still recommand (thought I don't like this word):
HPT, WYN, ACAS, NCV, Q, EMC, BRK-B
(see forum threads here on these stocks)
See also our consideration on bank stocks (see MS and BAC threads here). But IMO, they are dangerous still while attractive.
Of course there can be other and better picks.
Take a stock screener, select low P/E (between 4 and 9), low PEG, etc, then look for the companies which don't have problem (like accounting scandal, pending sales drop due to high gas prices etc).
When screening for stocks be extremely careful of obsolete datas or one-time item which boosted earnings and one time dividends.
High dividends is always nice. On Y! finance, click on "Historical prices", then select "dividend only" and you will see if the dividend is regular and which trend it has.
Always do that when buying a dividend stock.
Often companies which comes at the selection top are companies almost in bankcrupcy but the datas haven't been updated yet. That's why it's very important to read the news and company reports.
You will also stumble on a bunch of REIT (real estate funds). Don't buy these ones of course. Except if they are in niches not affected by the
subprime crisis.
Avoid message boards (except this one LOL).
You can also pick stock out of a "good idea", but here again check if the P/E, P/book, P/sale etc are not too high.
Finaly check the chart trend. These days many stock should be at their lowest point in 3 months if not one year.
Don't expect to fish the bottom. But keep some cash in case the market falls further.
HTH.

Here are 154 tickers selected as best by value and dividend (in order).
That's highly theoretical and misleading.
You will see that many are REIT and many are near-bankrupcy or in deep doo-doo but their datas are obsolete.
Those which are neither REIT or BK and their datas consistent with the latest news and reports, might be good picks.
They all have a market cap of more than 500 millions (if not their mkt cap has fallen with their stock price but remain large companies - no small cap or penny stock here.)
