We tested the tool and found it very straightforward and easy to use. Some points to note:

When you highlight over an option it explains it further in simple terms, thus great for new or basic investors.
All recommendations are based on Morningstar ratings which are industry wide trusted. Multi-page detailed analysis provided for each recommended fund as well.
One feature that would be nice though is to show the management fees on the results page instead of having to click through to the fund page. Perhaps organizing by management fees is another feature that would be well liked.

Etrade and Schwab Add Record Number of New Accounts

After announcing TradeKing’s 3rd Anniversory and their accomplishment of topping 100,000 total accounts earlier this week we became curious to find out how other competing brokers were doing. We discovered that Etrade and Schwab both put TradeKing to shame with record growth numbers of their own.

Schwab added an impressive 29,000 new accounts in October which was 88% more than the year prior. TradeKing in comparison only added 12,800.

The big surprise came from Etrade Financial which added an astounding 131,475 new accounts in October (full filing). Etrade (ETFC) currently trades for just over $1 a share as the stock was hammered with news that it was exposed to the subprime crisis. With so many online stock brokers to choose from it can be tough to sort through all the advertisements you see throughout the web. It seems that the bigger the stock broker the more money they have to spend on a variety of different advertisements targeted at investors.

I went searching for online broker ads as a result and found 10 that I thought were pretty good. For the sake of fitting them all I only focused on smaller button ads.

Honorable mention goes to Scottrade which is well known for their customer service and flat fee $7 stock trades. Scottrade has a $500 minimum to open an account.

Free trading can also be attained through Bank of America and Wells Fargo with a minimum of $25k alongside other requirements. For the simplicity of this review both brokers were not included. Furthermore, brokers that do not have flat rates and instead charge per share (Interactive Brokers, Thinkorswim, etc.) were also not included.
