Moving Comments Off the Blog and Into the Forum - Opinions?

I am contemplating this pretty severely in my head at the current moment and I want your opinion. Would you still leave comments if you were to leave them on the forum instead of here on the blog?

Right now all the posts are mentioned to and linked to on the forum here,

http://www.stocktradingtogo.com/forum/stock-trading-go-blogs/

Advantages of leaving comments on the forum:

  1. Your post is archived and you earn community reputation
  2. You are already in the forum when leaving the comment, so no need to leave!
  3. It spurs more forum discussion in other forum areas
  4. You have 10x more flexibility on content, and can include attachments like stock charts (see example)
  5. It’s more fun and personable

Disavantages:

  1. It is another page impression to get into the forum to leave a comment, so instead of leaving a comment right after you have to make another click.
  2. It isn’t as convenient

Personally, I am really in favor of atleast testing it out and seeing how it works. Steve Pavlina does this setup and it works just dandy for his site, so why wouldn’t it be the same for ours?

What do you think about moving post comments to the stock forum?

I hadn’t even noticed the forum on this site! I’ll definitely be in there more…as for moving comments off to the forum, I think you’ve got a very good idea about spurring discussion. If I were you, I would just make sure to include a link at the bottom of your post to the forum post associated with your blog post…just to make things transition as smoothly as possible

Ideally, you’d integrate the two, giving users quick access to comments from the post, but all of the advantages of the forums. A quick search for “vbulletin wordpress” yielded this result:

I also don’t personally comment on blogs which require me to log in to comment. It usually involves more time than I’m willing to invest. You may see that comment and think “what an idiot,” so I’ll clarify a little. No matter how simple you make it, someone else made it hard. One site requires numbers and capitals with no punctuation, another requires punctuation and numbers, another allows alphanumeric only, another has requirements, but they’re not specified. I read several hundred blogs and don’t care to keep track of the inane password requirements on each of them. Logging into a blog usually means clicking the “forgot password” link, waiting for the email, changing the password, leaving a comment and spitting the crushed teeth out of my mouth. It’s easier just to forget it.

Bryn hit the nail on the head…integration. I’d be more likely to not post if I had to log into the forum and do so…

I think Cody hit the nail on the head when he said “I hadn’t even noticed the forum on this site!”

Thumbs up to the idea. How many more people will then notice the forums? It’d have to increase.

It depends. Time is at a premium. If it takes more time, I probably would be less likely to leave a comment.

I have to say that for myself the fact that is isn’t nearly as convenient would probably detract me from leaving comments there and I suspect many other users would be the same way. Integration down the road would be a good idea, but getting rid of the comments here may not be the best.
