Market Jumps, Stocks Moves Higher on Shaky Volume

By looking at the straight numbers today was a great day. The NASDAQ Composite finished at 2,673.65 up 3.46%, the Dow Jones closed at 13,307.09 up 2.46%, and the S&P 500 finished at 1,481.05 up 2.91%. This is the biggest single day move for the market in nearly eight weeks.
The problem lies though in the volume, or number of shares traded. The indices posted volume nearly as strong as yesterday’s, but the stocks themselves showed volume lacking any major signs of accumulation.
The big news on the day came from Wal-Mart (WMT) and Goldman Sachs (GS). Wal-Mart had surprise 3rd quarter earnings with the retail giant posting net income of $2.86 billion, or 70 cents a share, versus $2.65 billion, or 63 cents a share, from the year prior. The stock finished up just over 6% on the day. Goldman Sachs had investors happy when it reported that it won’t be taking any significant charges to write off losses because they had a short position in subprime mortgages. Goldman finished up 8.54% on the day.
Other big news came between Apple (AAPL) and China Mobile (CHL). Tech stocks gained ground after China Mobile reported to be in talks with Apple to bring the iPhone over to China. Apple finished the day up 10.5% and China Mobile closed up 7.8%
Bullishness was seen really across the board today, but volume was lacking that added punch. Focusing on the leaders the following stocks had big days but on lower volume than the day prior: Google (GOOG) up over 4%, Apple (AAPL) up over 10%, Potash (POT) up 9.6%, First Solar (FSLR) up 8.6%, and Dryships (DRYS) up 17.4%. Baidu.com (BIDU) was amongst the only leaders to post large gains (14%) with higher volume than yesterday.
Oil also took another hit today on reports of higher supplies and less consumer demand. Light sweet crude fell $3.45 to close at $91.17 today. The record set last week was $98.62 a barrel. Oil futures have jumped 42 percent since late August.

I think the volume today was fairly strong. It certainly doesn’t match the volume from last week, but it was still stronger than normal. I think those who believe today is a sign that yesterday was a bottom will end up disappointed though.
