I don't think they increase traffic as much as they increase community activity (no brainer there). If anything they increase page impressions slightly (probably nothing noticeable) but that would be it. The whole value in the contest is in the readers hands, I really just think commenting is a great resemblance of an active alive blog, so to me that is worth investing in.
