5 Blogging Tips to Maximize Pageviews Per Visit

Darren Rowse is at it again this month with 31 Days to Building a Better Blog. I have decided to participate with a post on a few tips to maximize your total pageviews per visit.

  1. Install the Related Posts Plugin. This plugin will allow you to display a list of related posts below each individual posts. For example, if you look below this post you will find the “related posts” showing up which gives readers another way to click through to more of your content.
  2. Utilize Deep Interlinking. Every post I make I try and somewhere within it link to another post, page, or article within my blog. Interlinking helps readers find related content to the topic they are currently viewing, as a result keeping them on your site longer.
  3. Feature Your Best Content Above the Fold. I am constantly working at improving this, but basically the concept here is to show new readers your best stuff. A majority of people come into a site from some sort of link and are taken to a page they may or may not care about. Having your highlight content right there for them to view gives them another option to stay on the site and alongside spurring more pageviews it can also add RSS subscribers.
  4. Create Some Sort of Archive. My archive is my stock education database of tons of posts focusing on investment education. This page is one of the top most viewed pages each and every day and allows viewers to find and link right into my highlight content. Link readers to your archive with a menu bar link or a mention every once in a while within a post.
  5. Write Good Content. This is probably the toughest of them all, but if you can write strong content that readers love than they will surely be searching around for more. If you have 1 - 4 setup properly referring them should be a piece of cake.

These tips can be used with any blog regardless of your content. Make sure to check your google analytics often, and if you are averaging more than two pageviews per visit, know you are running a very effective blog.

That’s some great advice there. I’ve been meaning to set up that related posts script. Maybe I will do that today. Good work.

The plugin tip is a great idea!
Do you know what is the average page viewed for a blog? is 3 or 4 is achievable?
Thx!

average is id say between 1 - 1.5? That’d be my guess. 3 or 4 would be extremely tough for a blog, but I am sure it is achievable somehow cool

Yeah 3-4 would be hard because the front page can show SOOO many full length posts, that the reader may be reading 10 pages of info that is contained on the main page…

I seen pfblog.com make every post on the front page just show description of the article, but to see the rest of the article you must click on the “continue reading” button. This probably helps him get a lot of extra page views he wouldn’t have and that in turn helps him sell ads. I’m thinking of doing something like this eventually… for now I have to worry about my content getting better and more frequent.

Oh, and that damn ‘related posts’ plugin is a pain to install.. I wish it would work with one click…

Did you get it working though?

I like the idea of featuring a few of your best posts above the fold. Something to catch the eye when a reader first hits your site.

Good advice, but how effective is the related posts plugin really? If you’re interlinking your articles well enough, is it necessary unless you have huge archives?

To be honest, I found the related posts plugin wasn’t as effective as doing the work yourself, it was too hit and miss. I wrote a post covering my technique here: Reducing Bounce Rates with the Personal Touch.

It really works, but takes a little bit of extra work. And reducing the bounce rate is the first (and most important step) to increasing page views per visit. Nice post by the way.

Blain, I would be curious to know what is your bounce rate and what you do to improve it. This could be a good idea for another post!

My bounce rate is somewhere around 70% I believe. To be honest I don’t even know what is a good number for this though?

You absolute star! You’ve just reminded me to grab the related posts plugin. That by far was one of the best plugins I had on my old blog. Suprised I’d forgotten about it.

It does have quite an impact and reduces bounce rates on your site quite a bit.

Blain

I think it’s all your tips above that have helped me get more from your blog here.

I’ve installed the related posts plugin at mine last night. It hasn’t shown up yet, I’ll wait and see by the evening otherwise find a solution to the problem.

Thanks again

- Kavit

Hi Harry,

To find great plugins I would simply search for them on google. Search something like “Top wordpress plugins” or something and see what comes up. Hope that helps.
