I would say $15 eCPM for Adsense was fairly standard. Not sure where "awesome" comes from...?

This helps a lot Nabloid, thanks man for the detailed comment  I am going to ponder this more, but I am thinking of keeping it up into the fall to see if ECPM improves once everyones advertising budgets kick up a notch. As for affiliates, I think these may be integrated much more coming in September.

I'd say the main problem with advertising is that it sometimes takes your visitors away from your site for a small amount of money, often less than what that visitor could be worth (which is why an advertiser is willing to pay to get that customer). This is especially true if you were selling a 'stock trading' subscription worth $50 to $100 a month, then taking your visitor away from your site for a few pennies would be a huge shame.

The good thing about Kontera is it doesn't take up any space at all though and most visitors will come back if they liked what they saw anyways.

I guess you have to ask yourself what your goal is with this site and others that you have.... do you want to get advertising revenues up high so its like an online magazine(in which case, try some affiliate stuff)? Or do you want to start a subscription site? Or do you want to sell products (ebooks, and the like)? Depending on your answer Kontera could continue on as an additional money maker or be taken down to help you better monetize the customers with a different approach.

SO what is the ultimate goal for this site (and your others?) Where and what do you want them to eventually be/do?

Have you tried FAN (Feedburner's Ad Network)? I make about three times as much with FAN than Adsense, which still isn't much. Your traffic is higher than mine I think so you could probably pull in better than $100 per month easily. Click on the monetize tab and it'll walk you through.
