Site Updates For Speed and Ease, Changing Hosts and Switching Domains

UPDATE: Transition Successful.

This has been a while in the planning, and finally now I have worked up the guts to simply “go for it”. Stock Trading To Go hopefully by tomorrow will have accomplished two major changes:

  1. Moving to a newer, faster server at GoDaddy
  2. Moving the blog from “falkininvesting.com/blog” to “stocktradingtogo.com”

Changing Hosts

Currently about half my sites are being hosted with IXWebhosting, and let me tell you, it could be a lot better. Last quarter my uptime here on the blog was a measily 94%, that’s it! Load time is horribly slow, and less their customer support (which is great), IXWebhosting simply, well, sucks.

I have the other half of my sites right now over at godaddy.com (including sister blog stockchartstogo.com) and overall I’ve been very pleased. Uptime is great and even though I am still on a shared hosting plan, I figure right now ANYTHING will be better than IX. Until I grow out of GoDaddy or they start crapping out on me I am going to utilize them.

Switching Domains

Since this blog was originally launched as Stock Trading 101, it has been here at the falkininvesting.com domain. Now as Stock Trading To Go, I have recently acquired stocktradingtogo.com and have been itching to make the move.

The whole purpose of doing this is to simplify everything for you the readers, for advertisers, and to get the domain up and running on its own. The best part is that I found a way that none of this will affect traffic or my search engine rankings (I hope). It is through what are called 301 redirects.

What a 301 redirect does is sets up all my current pages so they refresh at the new domain, while telling google, yahoo, msn, etc. that this switch is a permanent move. The search engines simply transfer my page ranking, update the page locations within their indexes, and I go on my marry way. So, once this is all done, if you go to for instance, “http://falkininvesting.com/blog/free-education/”, you will automatically be redirected to “http://www.stocktradingtogo.com/free-education”.

Current Status

As of now I am waiting for Godaddy to import my currentl sql database for stocktradingtogo onto their servers. Once that is finished, I simply can setup the blog and all of its pages over at stocktradingtogo.com, and then initiate the 301 redirects. You as a reader should only notice a slightly faster average page upload time and a new simplified location for the blog.

By as early as later tonight, or by tomorrow the switch should be completed. See you on the other side.

Awesome… I was wondering when you would change to a more appropriate domain! It should do wonders after a few months!!

Good luck on the easy move! I have a virtual dedicated server (linux) at GoDaddy as well…
