Wordpress Crash, Lost Information
Alright,
Well, I can at least now say that my blog is now functioning, and if anyone was here over the last 30 minutes, you would have found a mess. Basically what happened is Wordpress exploded, and my whole database was shot. Now, the first question that should immediately come to mind is, “Did you have a backup Blain?”
Answer is yes, THANK GOD, but it is just over a week old. So, the post below this you will find my chart and technical analysis of Mastercard (MA) from the 15th. I can laugh at the whole matter and brush it aside knowing my life’s work (does that sound too serious?) is still intact, but it makes me ponder in my nice brain God gave me the following question, “What if I didn’t have that backup?”
“GAME OVER” would be the only honest and truthful answer for that one, so below I am going to summarize what I have learned from this situation, and hope you take it to heart:
- Backup your database at least once a week. If you post daily like I do, backing up every day or every other day is even better. I was VERY lucky to only loose a week of data, because the next backup I had on file was from the beginning of January. You can download an automatic backup program so you don’t have to do it yourself. I actually just found this out like 5 minutes ago, and will be getting such a plugin momentarily.
- Have at least three backups on standby in case your database dies randomly. Reading through Wordpress help docs I just found this out as well, and heck, it makes sense. What if my most recent backup is bad? Anymore older than that you can delete, but keep at least three recent ones!
- Appreciation. It is like one of those times where you try to open your eyes and they haven’t adjusted yet so you cant see anything and u think “holy tomatoes, what if I was blind?”. You don’t realize what you HAD until you LOOSE it. I’ve realized in this chaotic moment that Ive put it ALOT into my blog, over 1000 posts worth. And, to loose it because of my incompetence would be a horrible situation. Bottom line, the higher your appreciation, the more you’ll take care of it on a day to day basis.
So, all in all, this whole experience had me feeling a lot of different emotions, but after it all I feel very lucky things didn’t end up worse. Take this occurrence as a lesson, and ask yourself this question, “If I woke up tomorrow and my database was gone, would I be ok?”
